Editorial: Things to mention (Printed Dec. 7, 2007)
We have to admit, we’re a little
disappointed in our readers. In last week’s Post we announced the
beginning of nominations for our annual Great Person Award and as of
press time, have received only two.
While we’re sure the two people nominated live up to and beyond Great Person qualifications, we wonder why more people are not stepping up to honor their friends, relatives and neighbors who are making a mark on the community.
Post readers have a reputation of being very involved in everything that goes into the paper. Every day we receive emails regarding the paper, keeping us on our toes about surfacing stories, important charitable events or simple calendar listings. When we make the occasional boo-boo, readers are especially quick to call us on those too, as they should be.
We’re asking you to look closely at the people in your tight knit communities. Maybe it’s the crossing guard that guides your children safely to school every day. Maybe it’s a volunteer at a local non-profit organization, or a parent who gives their time to volunteer at one of the schools. We know great people are out there, but it’s your job to bring them forward into the spotlight. There’s one more week open for nominations, so don’t hesitate, the clock is ticking.
On another note, we would like to take a moment to toot our own horn. Four days after the Post’s Nov. 23 issue was published, the NBC Nightly News gave us a ring because they wanted to use Stowell Watters’ front page photo of the new Walker’s Point wind turbine in their broadcast.
The person requesting the photo was very brief and when asked how they saw the newspaper, he mumbled something about a newsroom employee picking up on it. Much too busy to give us an answer I guess.
They called on a Tuesday, deadline day, the most inconvenient day they could choose to call, but we sent it off and all tuned in to watch the news that night. It was very brief, and credit to the Post and Stowell was very tiny at the bottom of the photo, but it was exciting just the same.
