Letter: Equest taking time to share their accomplishments (Printed Dec. 7, 2007)

Editor:
As 2007 comes to a close, Equest Therapeutic Riding Center would like to share some accomplishments from our ninth season serving southern Maine, and thank the community for its support. This year our team of trained therapy horses, certified instructors, dedicated volunteers and staff touched the lives of more than 130 children and adults with physical, cognitive and emotional disabilities. We feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these individuals and Equest riders are making great strides!
Equest was successfully re-accredited as a Premier Accredited Riding Center with the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) in the fall. This is a voluntary peer review process that recognizes excellence in providing quality equine-assisted activities. We are very proud to report that Equest achieved a perfect score on more than 100 standards!  Our accredited programs include General Therapeutic Riding, Hippotherapy and Therapeutic Carriage Driving.
Additionally, Equest instructor Marilyn Danis was named NARHA Instructor of the Year for Region One (all of New England and New York). Marilyn is a caring and committed instructor, and her recognition is even more meaningful in that it is a first for the State of Maine. Marilyn represented Equest proudly at the NARHA National Conference in Anaheim, Calif. in November.  We recognize all of our instructors, staff and volunteers for their important role in providing an exceptional and nurturing learning environment for Equest students.
Thanks to the vital support of numerous individuals, businesses and foundations, 25 percent of Equest students received full or partial rider scholarships in 2007. We would like to thank all of you for your very important contributions—you make our success possible.  As we look forward to celebrating Equest’s 10th year of service in 2008, we invite those unfamiliar with our efforts to become involved with the rewarding work at Equest. See you at the farm!
