• Sally Keene of Kennebunk was nominated by Andrea Ettinger. “She has helped her elderly mom remain in her home for many years, taking her to numerous doctor appointments, running errrands, and including her in her own activities.  Her mom decided last spring to go to an assisted living facility to live, as it was not safe for her to be alone any more. She has also given numerous volunteer hours to the Unitarian Church in Kennebunk. She has been on numerous committees including the board of directors (on these committees).  She started a “Shawl Ministry” at church, for people who have experienced loss of a loved one or have gone thru a recent hardship. They receive a beautiful hand-knit shawl to comfort them. I have been one of the lucky recipients!  She has also co-led a grief support group through Southern Maine Visiting Nurses, after losing her own 31-year-old son to a brain tumor. She has also been involved in the Linus Project, leading groups of people to make blankets for children as a way to comfort them, and let others know that there are people out there who care. She is an incredible selfless person, and I am so grateful to call her my friend.  She is incredibly deserving of this award.  She never asks for anything, only what she can do for others. She is a wondferful role model for us all, and has touched many, many lives.”
• Tom Braga of the Kennebunk Five and Dime was nominated by Emma Hauser. In the nomination she said, “He maintains a shop that contributes to the character of downtown Kennebunk. He is always friendly to the children and frequently gives the littlest ones extra balloons. He provides a place to buy things you need in your home without going to super stores in larger towns further away. He always has a smile.”
“This award is unique in that anyone can be nominated. There are no special qualifications,” said Brandi Neal, managing editor. “Its purpose is to honor those people who make our communities such a great place to live. It can be someone that you know really well, or someone you’ve met in passing – but has had an impact on you.”
