K'port voters were ‘hoodwinked’ at contract zone vote (Printed Dec. 21, 2007)

Editor:
At its Dec. 13 meeting the selectmen in Kennebunkport discussed the need for public restrooms at Goose Rocks Beach and what they might do to provide them, since the warrant to construct a permanent one was linked to the conversion of the Tides Inn to condos and was turned down by the majority of those voting last month.
As I consider the subject, it seems to me that most of the voters of Kennebunkport who voted against the warrant were hoodwinked.  Judging from the ad in the Post, those opposing this change, and who appear to have deep pockets, used scare tactics to misinform the voters about their real issue.
In reality, that issue was not contract zoning but their displeasure at the construction of a permanent restroom at the beach, one that would be deeded to the town, tied into both the sewer and water lines, constructed to be unobtrusive, serviced daily by the town, and with a parking place next to it.  Futhermore, it would only be used during the summer months.
Given that this was the proposal, the real issue, according to the letters in the Post by those who vocally opposed the warrant, was that the people who come by car to the beach in the summer are “slobs.”  They strew the beach with litter and would most likely do the same around a public restroom.  Furthermore, they might also be loud and boisterous in a quiet neighborhood.  The conclusion then can only be that those who come to Goose Rocks Beach by car in the summer are undesirable people, who should not be afforded a public restroom for their needs.  And this of course includes the citizens of Kennebunkport as well as folks from away, since those opposed to the restrooms made no distinctions.
As I see it, the concern for contract zoning was a hoax.  The real issue was the rest rooms and the voters were duped!
