Editorial: "Why no bathrooms?" (Printed Dec. 21, 2007)
Why is it that Kennebunkport always has such issue
with allowing public restrooms in their town? It seems silly that in a
tourist driven community, this would be a problem.
Some opponents say having such facilities at Goose Rocks Beach will attract unwanted people and trash, which isn’t true.
Build a restroom and they will come, isn’t what is going on here. People are coming, and in the future, will continue coming to the beach whether there’s a restroom or not. Why not make it easier for them, they are, after all, the people who spend money and keep the economy going strong in Kennebunkport.
Having a public restroom would actually rid opponents of the worry of increased trash – what public restroom have you seen that doesn’t contain a trash receptacle? The beach might actually be cleaner.
It’s been suggested that residents voted down the Tides Inn contract zone because its owner was going to construct a restroom for public use. While we hope that’s not the case (because it borders on absurdity), Marie Henriksen had the right idea in offering a public restroom.
Doesn’t Kennebunk want to welcome visitors? It doesn’t sound like it lately, but hopefully by the time June rolls around people will be seeing things from a different perspective.
