Editorial: "Be safe" (Printed Jan. 11, 2008)

This winter’s hefty snowfall accumulation is a dream for outdoor enthusiasts, but for some in Maine and around the country outdoor sporting has already shown its grim side.
Visit national news Web sites and there are tales of missing hikers, skiers and snowmobilers. Unfortuneatly, local headlines are also telling these stories, including the death of  Christopher Jackson, of Kennebunk, who died in a snowmobile accident over the weekend.
If you don’t snowmobile, chances are you know someone who does. When accidents occur, it’s not necessarily because the person was not being safe, but it can’t hurt to brush up on safety facts and encourage loved ones to do the same.
We came across a Web site, www.snowmobilers.org, which outlines various aspects of snowmobiling and quizzes the reader after each section.
The site addresses safety, such as first aid techniques, reading signs correctly and what tools a snowmobiler should know how to use. It addresses the precautions one should take before they ride and while riding, such as what apparel a rider should wear, how they should ride in a group or alone, night riding and riding in snow conditions.
There’s a section of the site that addresses maintenance, fall preparation, spring storage and identifies each part of the sled.
The site also gives advice as to what to do in emergencies such as being stuck, stranded, keeping warm and other dangers to avoid.
This site would be worth checking out if you are a snowmobiler, or know someone who is. It could prevent an accident and maybe you could learn something you didn’t know.
