Kennebunk Selectman June Huston’s term unexpectedly came to an end Jan. 8 when she announced her resignation at a selectmen’s meeting.
“This was a very hard decision,” Huston said, adding that responsibilities in other areas of her life have continued to make her position as a selectman difficult. Huston’s term was set to expire June 2009. Huston said the decision is one she has been debating with for the past four months.
“We will miss her,” Selectmen Chairman Wayne Berry said as he accepted her resignation.
The board has to fill Huston’s seat within 45 days of her resignation. A special election is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 21 to fill Huston’s seat. Anyone interested in the position may get nomination papers at town hall Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., until Jan. 18. Absentee ballots are available at the town hall beginning Jan. 22.
The board consists of five members, each member serving staggered three-year terms, with a chairmen elected by the board each June. The responsibilities of the selectmen consist of establishing policy, supervising the town manager, tax assessor, represent the town on local and state issues and provide public leadership. The board meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.
Huston lives in Kennebunk with her two children and juggles a painting company on the side.
