Molly's Musings" "Real or not, it doesn’t matter" (Printed Jan. 25, 2008)

I admit it, I love reality television and by the time the new TV season rolls around each year, networks seem to have come up with even crazier – and cornier – ideas to exploit.
Some people think reality TV is for the unintelligent. I think it’s an hour out of my life spent being entertained by ridiculous people in ridiculous situations. It’s kind of a stress reliever to me.
That’s not to say I believe what I see, though. Every network, every producer, every character or actor has their own agenda. It doesn’t matter what you’re watching, you have got to be careful what you take for truth and question everything.
That being said, I still don’t care if these shows have an ounce of truth in them – they’re pure entertainment.
Real World casting directors obviously pick the people with attitude issues to pair with the meek and introverted – and of course they’re all great looking. Sometimes I watch Wife Swap – I don’t think the people on that show are even real because they’re so outrageous.
Part of the reason why I like these shows is because they make me feel like I’m a fly on the wall somewhere I’m not supposed to be. Who wouldn’t want to be a fly on the wall anywhere?
My fiancé disagrees with me. He said he would have no interest in such an opportunity, and I disagree with him. We talked/argued about this one night and I asked him to put this idea in a different context.
I for one would love to be a fly on the wall in a room with my future in-laws because I know (from experience) they tend to gossip about absent family members. As a reporter and editor, I would love to be a fly on the wall during a closed meeting among town officials. The possibilities are endless.
In terms of me and my fondness of reality television, I know I’m not a fly on the wall in a real situation, but I get the same feeling. If I thought there was anything real in reality TV, I would say ‘shame on me.’ But I take it for what it is, I enjoy it and I don’t see any shame in that.
