Editorial: To the dogs (Printed Feb. 1, 2008)

It’s been a good week for dogs. Pit bulls seized last year from NFL Football Player Michael Vick are finding their way into loving homes, and locally the dogs rescued from J’aime Kennels in Buxton are fairing well too.
The Post is happy to hear that all of these dogs are getting a second chance at a good life after enduring pain and suffering at the hands of their former owners. The Animal Welfare Society of West Kennebunk recently offered a training and obedience class for the dogs rescued from the Buxton puppy mill (see our story on page 6).
The dogs and their new owners were given the opportunity to socialize and learn how to successfully interact with one another. To witness dogs that spent most of their lives confined to cages interact freely with other animals and people was a heartwarming scene to say the least, and the Post is proud to document a happy ending for these pets.
Some dogs are still waiting adoption, but the AWS says the demand for these pets has been high, while cautioning new owners about the challenges of raising a puppy mill pet. A waiting period has been initiated to give potential owners time to read necessary literature.
For the victims of Vick’s dog fighting ring, some of the pit bulls were lucky enough to survive the brutality and be adopted into loving homes. Vick will serve less than a year for federal dog fighting charges, while the fate of the owners of J’aime Kennels remains to be seen.
Both of these cases are an example of how the love of a good owner can make all the difference in the life of an animal. To these people, we applaud you.
And to the people who neglected, abused or otherwise harmed the aforementioned pets, we have just one thing to say — shame on you.
