Letter: Liken global warming debate to this if you must (Printed Feb. 15, 2008)
Editor:
Jeff Cole can cite statistical data until he is blue in the face. So can climate scientists. Neither changes the fact that carbon dioxide absorbs and re-radiates infrared (heat) energy while nitrogen and oxygen (which make up most of the atmosphere) do not. If you increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, more infrared energy is re-radiated back to earth. I described the process in detail in a previous letter.
I liken the argument between climate scientists and folks like Jeff Cole to an argument over whether a worn rug in your house needs replacing. Regardless of how worn it might look, or even if it looks worn at all, if you keep walking on it, you’ll need to replace it eventually (or someone else will).
