Letter: Because of Collins, communications criminals run free (Printed Feb. 22, 2008)

Editor:
Collins’ vote to allow immunity to telecoms surveillance, in the FISA Amendments vote, stands as the most recent stain on Collins’ failed Senate record. Not only has she voted with Bush time after time, piling up her list of giveaways to corporations, she has also turned our proud manufacturing heritage in Maine into a full-fledged weapon’s industry.
Next, she attempts to take away our individual freedoms in co-sponsoring the ‘Home Grown Terrorist Bill known as the ‘Thought Crime Bill’, SR 1959.
Now Collins takes her unconscionable voting record to new heights, by ushering in the death knell to laws protecting our country: she permits companies to spy on Americans.
Well, thanks a heap, Susan Collins. Because of your vote yesterday, we now live in an age where communication criminals can run free. They can lie, snoop, wiretap, bug, invade, monitor, spy and collect information on any Americans – and use that information without any fear of prosecution.
This must fit nicely with your plan to let the government bug and prosecute anyone by dubbing them home-grown terrorists.
This can include anyone who runs against you for the Senate or protests your record of Bush enabling!  You could spy on any media or press for criticizing you, or printing letters from those who do!
Where does this horrendous decision end, Susan?  Nobody should EVER believe, after this vote, that you are moderate.
You’ve betrayed Maine. We depended on you to defend our independence and privacy but now you permit phone and surveillance businesses and the government to invade every whisper, thought or choice we make as formerly-free Americans.
Did you think that this would make you invincible? Well, I am going to defeat you and replace you as the next Senator for Maine.
We need leaders who stand against you for hurting our liberties.  You will see, Susan, that we are fierce about protecting our rights as Americans.
I condemn your recent vote and insist that you resign your seat in the Senate. You are no longer fit to lead the state of Maine.
