Letter: What do we, and don’t we, know about global warming (Printed Feb. 22, 2008)

Thomas Sowell recently pointed out: “It is bad enough that so many people believe things without any evidence. What is worse is that some people have no conception of evidence and regard facts as just someone else’s opinion.”
What facts do we really know? We know that the earth’s climate is dynamic, not static. That means that global climate changes over time from warm to cool to warm.
What don’t we really know about climate change? We do not know what causes the dynamic state of the earth’s climate. There are many indicators:
The activity of the sun is probably the biggest driver of climate.
The change in earth’s orbit may contribute.
The amount of radioactive heat from the earth’s interior might also contribute.
The amount of “Greenhouse gases” in the atmosphere and the relationship of those to climate must be considered.
Concerning greenhouse gases the largest is H2O, simple water vapor. As for CO2, carbon dioxide, it is a very small amount. It does not seem to be large enough to cause climate change.
What does all of this mean? Because the earth’s climate is dynamic, it certainly undergoes change. The temperature has moved upward over the past 100 to 150 years. I tend to lean toward the view that the earth entering a warm period
What about so-called “man-made global warming?” We simply don’t really know enough about climate change to make any serious predictions.
If there was sufficient evidence that we are entering a warming period because of human activity it would be there in no uncertain terms. Unfortunately, our PhDs who expose “Global Warming caused by man” think that their titles alone, like the medieval scholars, make their claims unassailable. They do not have to present scientific evidence. Otherwise at least one PhD would have stepped up by now, taken the Great Global warming Challenge (see junkscience.com) and looked forward to claiming the $150,000 prize.
I would be willing to bet that if ‘AN INCONVIENT TRUTH’ has been shown in our schools, both public and private, that ‘THE GREAT GLOBAL WARMING SWINDLE’ has NOT been shown. That is because “Global warming has become the pseudo-Biblical religion of our time. It is complete with unbelievers, heretics and evil-doers, such as “Deniers of Global warming are like those who deny the holocaust!” (Who is doing the screaming here?)
