Letter: Arundel Historical Committee needs your help (Printed March 7, 2008)

Editor:

On behalf of the Arundel Historical Committee I am writing to request citizens of Arundel to help in a community effort. We are currently trying to update a list of historical dwellings in the town of Arundel circa 1910 and before the turn of the century. While many names and dwellings were compiled for Arundel’s 350th celebration we are hoping to add to the list. If you are aware of the date or approximate date of a dwelling you live in that was build prior to 1910 we would like to hear from you, also, names of previous owners, stories or anecdotes about your house would be great to have so that we may record them.

Please send them to the town hall as follows: Historical Committee, c/o Town of Arundel, 468 Limerick Road, Arundel, Maine, 04046.

There are several boxes in the Kennebunkport Historical Society vault that contain information relevant to your request. One in particular contains loose pages of "The Arundel House Book" Research was done by Ruth Landon and Adelaide Day on the history of home ownership, street by street.
Deeds since 1960 are posted online at the York County Registry of Deeds Website if you need to update the work done by Ruth and Adelaide. http://www.york.me.us.landata.com/

1856 and 1872 Atlas' of York County incude houses with owners names. Images of both maps of Arundel are posted online at www.mykennebunks.com/maps.htm .
