Letter: Top 12 reasons to vote against budget (May 16, 2008)

Editor:
Unfortunately I find it necessary to vote against the proposed school budget for 2008-2009 for the following reasons.
1. I will vote against this budget because I do not think the MSAD71 Administration and School Board are taking into consideration the economic strain the proposed school budget puts on so many members of our community.
2. I will vote against the proposed school budget because the student enrollment is declining yet the school budget increases each year.
3. I will vote against this school budget because there are empty classrooms in the elementary and middle schools.
4. I cannot support this budget because closing a school has been based upon emotion and not on fact.
5. I will vote “no” because teacher positions have not declined in line with the decline of students.
6. My vote will be “no” because expensive new programs have been added to the curriculum without dropping an existing program of comparable cost.
7. I cannot support this budget because the majority of the taxpayers in Kennebunk cannot afford the costly and generous benefits given to teachers.
8. My vote must be “no” because this budget will increase the cost of educating one student to over $13,000 per year.
9. I will vote “no” on this school budget because the School Board will not reduce this crushing 70 precent of our tax bill unless we do it for them.
10. When I vote “no,” I am aware that the school budget will remain at last year’s level until a reduced budget can be voted on. The children and their education will not suffer.
11. I cannot vote for this budget because the cost of operating all these schools is rising even faster than the rate of inflation.
12. I will vote against this proposed 2008-2009 school budget not because I don’t like children and don’t value education but because I believe the majority of Kennebunk residents cannot afford this increase in taxes at this difficult time in our troubling economy.
Please let your voice be heard and vote on May 20 at town hall from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
