Letter: Repeal contract zoning on June 10 (May 30, 2008)
Editor:
I urge the voters of Kennebunkport to vote for repeal of contract zoning by voting yes on Question 9 on the ballot. Two hundred and fifty-one registered voters requested the issue be placed on the ballot. Contract zoning is another means of spot zoning which only favors a few and violates the town’s growth planning ordinance. Contract zoning is unfair to local citizens who do not have the means to bypass established land use ordinances. Contract zoning gives the board of selectman too much power. The current board is intent to advance development of tourism at the cost of changing the nature of our community. Contract zoning has been voted against twice in the last two years, both on School Street and at Goose Rocks. Let’s put an end to this very bad issue by voting “yes” on Question 9.
