At the polls: Arundel School Board (June 6, 2008)
Matthew Sylvanus
Candidate’s statement:
“My name is Matthew Sylvanus, and I am running for the Arundel School Board on June 10. I have lived in Maine my entire life, moving to Arundel in 2001, with my wife of 11 years, Carolyn. Education has always been a priority in our home, as Carolyn is an educator. Our son, Noah, will be entering kindergarten at Mildred L. Day School this fall.
“I have attended nearly every school board and consolidation meeting during the past year, and have continued to voice the same message, ‘We need to do what is best for the education of the children of Arundel.’ We need to continue looking for educational opportunities in order to prepare our children for the world outside of school. We must continue to challenge the students, teachers, parents, school board, and the town to improve the quality of education we provide our children. We need to provide a safe and secure environment, in order to get the very best efforts from them.
“As residents of a small town, we are always faced with tough economic times. The majority of our tax dollars go toward funding education. As a member of the School Board, it would be my responsibility to control spending while looking to provide the best education possible for our kids. Since the majority of our tax dollars go toward funding education, it would be my responsibility to keep residents informed about overall performance, as well as ongoing initiatives to improve education.
“If elected to the school board, I will continue to voice the same message, “We need to do what is best for the education of the children of Arundel.’ I will carry this message to all grade levels and all schools Arundel children attend, K thru 12. I will keep the public informed, and I will control spending as much as possible, while still providing the best educational opportunities for our children.
“If you believe in my message, “We need to do what is best for the education of the children of Arundel,’ please vote for me on June 10. Thank You.”
