Letter: Keep voters right to decide (June 6, 2008)
Editor:
Once again I find myself defending my right to decide to vote. Contract zoning is an ordinance Kennebunkport voters passed overwhelmingly in 2006. The voters passed it because we felt we needed a stronger voice in town government particularly with regard to our land use ordinance.
I cannot understand this small group of people, continually writing to the newspapers, that want to take our rights away. I do not appreciate having my intelligence insulted by this group that insists the rest of us are not smart enough to make up our own minds on matters regarding the welfare of our town. Well, I believe we have all done a fairly good job making decisions for the town so far.
The land trust can use contract zoning to bring their upcoming proposals for projects at Goat Island, the Grist Mill property and other historical properties in town. If the voters approve they will support these proposals given their existing right to vote because contract zoning should be in place. The voters have the right to disapprove or approve all contract zoning matters. That is the American way and that is why maintaining our right to vote is so important. If we like the project – it’s a go. If we do not, the subject project does not go forward. Contract zoning is an important tool and we should keep it in place.
We need contract zoning for projects that make common sense for our community. Voting to do away with contract zoning is a mistake. Vote “no” on Question 9 and let the voters keep their right to decide.
