Letter: Motorcycle roar disruptive (June 20, 2008)
Editor:
On Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, my husband and I decided to go into downtown Kennebunk for an ice cream and a stroll. Unfortunately, it was not a pleasant experience as we were assaulted by the sound of dozens of motorcycles traveling down Main Street. Because we live in the vicinity of Route One, it was impossible to escape the motorcycle noise that continued throughout the day. There were still motorcycles cruising when I went to bed at 11 p.m. and the next morning I was awakened at 7:30 a.m. by their roar. Every weekend since Memorial Day has been the same – a steady roar of motorcycles from early morning until late at night.
Ever since the opening of Bentley’s biker bar in Arundel, our town has been invaded by hordes of motorcyclists who are causing one of the worst cases of noise pollution this town has had to endure. It is my understanding that some motorcycle owners alter their exhaust systems by installing pipes that are designed to make noise and possess noise levels far in excess to current manufacturing requirements. Why is it that motorcyclists can get away with loud exhaust systems and motorists are pulled over by police if their cars make the same noise?
It is my hope that Kennebunk police and town leaders will address this problem of motorcycle noise.
