Airport open house and car show kicks off tomorrow (June 27, 2008)

Plans for Sanford Regional Airport’s eighth annual Open House and the 14th annual Elks Car Show are underway. The gates open Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Sanford Regional Airport Manager Evan McDougal said if rain moves into the area, the event will be moved to Sunday.
He said he would make the decision to move the event to the rain date by Friday.
McDougal said events and activities will include air shows, demonstrations and vendors, as well as tethered hot air balloon rides, helicopter rides and open cockpit biplane rides.
Air show performers include Manfred Radius, Rob Holland and three Red Star Rally pilots, McDougal said.
He suggested people bring lawn chairs so they can sit during shows.
Maine Model Jet Rally members will also be on hand for demonstration flights of scale model turbine jets. The Sanford Police Department is scheduled to conduct a K9 demonstration and the Sanford Fire Department will show how fire suppressing foam is used in emergencies.
Springvale First Baptist Church will host a public breakfast, featuring pancakes, sausage, coffee and juice will be served in the Southern Maine Aviation hangar from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. for $6 per adult and $3.50 for children 12 and younger.
The car show, sponsored by the Elks Lodge will feature more than 120 cars, from restored antiques to street rods and motorcycles.
Kids can participate in games and contests such as Hula Hoop and bubble gum blowing contests.
Registration for the car show begins at 7 a.m. and ends at 10 a.m. A $5 registration fee per car show entry is required and trophies will be awarded in 23 categories.
Pilots with a valid pilot certificate will receive a free breakfast, courtesy of Southern Maine Aviation.
 McDougal said admission to the open house and car show is free, although a $5 parking fee donation is requested.
 “You could bring a car full of people for $5 and not spend any more money for the rest of the day,” he said.
He said he expects a good crowd for the event and hoped the weather would hold out. He advised people to visit the town’s Web site www.Sanfordmaine.org and click on the Sanford Regional Airport tab Friday afternoon to find out if the event is postponed call 608-4186 after 3 p.m. Friday.
