Letter: Increase is not so large (June 27, 2008)

Editor:
I’d like to clarify some math from Sue Walker’s June 20 letter [“Thanks for voting the wrong way,” page 20]. After the voters increased Kennebunk’s budget, Walker claimed that the mil rate is going up by $13.90. But according to an article in the same issue, $13.90 is the new mil rate, not the increase. I believe the increase is $1.05.
Walker was mortified to see the town spending $24,000 on the Shoreline Trolley. That’s about $2.40 for each resident of Kennebunk, or three cents of the mil rate. If you own a typical house in Kennebunk, the trolley is costing you the equivalent of a couple gallons of gas per year. I spend far more money on gasoline than property taxes, so I’m happy to see some of my tax dollars going to public transportation.
