Letter: Support President Bush and support Higgins, too (Aug. 22, 2008)
Editor:
Three cheers for Robert Lothrop, Sr., Art Thoms, James Cressey and Lee Burnham! (Aug. 15 Post) I admire them for speaking up for the office of the President of the United States and for the person holding that office They have reminded us of the meaning and importance of the word “respect,” a word that seems to be forgotten by the very vocal minority in our towns. One person, and in this case George W. Bush, logically and realistically cannot be blamed for all the ills in the world.
He is president of our great country, but he is also a human being. He deserves respect as do the rest of us human beings who have been known to err while trying to right a wrong or who have made “lip-slips” that might have offended someone. By trying to tear down the president with character assassination, you also destroy, a little at a time, a portion of our history as a great nation and of our states as united.
I have attended Kennebunk town meetings where I have cringed but sat silent while not only our president but also God were ridiculed. I am ashamed that I did not speak up in protest. Character assassination is taking place in Kennebunk right now on the board of selectmen. Bob Higgins made a “lip-slip” and offended someone in the fire department. I have sat at and watched Kennebunk Selectmen meetings for a long time, and I have heard worse from other selectmen, at a board meeting, acting as selectmen, not as a private resident as Bob Higgins was at the time of his brush fire. Enough is enough, support President Bush in the job he is trying to do for the American people to keep them safe, and support Bob Higgins as he works to save money for the Kennebunk taxpayers.
