Letter: District discriminates against snowbirds (Aug. 29, 2008)

Editor:

This is in response to an article that appeared recently in another newspaper. It deals with the proposal of the KK&WWD to restructure the present rate structure.

The first obvious word that comes to my mind is ‘discrimination’! When a select group of people are singled out there is no other word in the English language more apt than ‘discrimination.’

The KK&WWD is proposing this new rate structure depending on the volume of water that people use. Some of the words that they banter about conservation are: “shift cost to customers that use the most water.” That sounds good to me.

Now here comes the slammer! Year-rounders would pay $2.17 per 750 gallons while seasonal folks would pay $4.22 for the same amount. How fair is this?

Do seasonal people pay less taxes because they are part time residents? Let’s cut the double talk about higher administration costs due to seasonal usage!

Our wonderful country continues to fight various types of discrimination: Religious discrimination, age discrimination, mental and physical disabilities discrimination. Now ‘limited thinking’ people have added yet a new discrimination. This one is from the KK&WWD and is called the ‘seasonal discrimination’.

How sad that every seasonal resident of this most wonderful community, may now be subjugated to this new and extremely unfair discrimination. As Samuel Gompers told the UWA ‘unite and fight’, so I now address fellow seasonal residents to ‘unite and fight’ this discrimination.
