Letter: Those defending president’s record are misinformed (Aug. 29, 2008)
Editor:
This is a heartfelt response to the letters of Lee Burnham, Robert Lothrop, Sr., and most especially Art Thoms, all of Kennebunk, as published in the recent edition of the Kennebunk Post.
As far as showing this president respect, dignity and the right to a peaceful vacation in Kennebunkport, I am loathe to offer any of these, as Mr. Bush has failed on every call, to show respect for his office or for the American people. He has shown himself (on so many occasions), to be a bias, graceless, inept and ill-spoken representative of the United States that those of you who voted for him and still die-heartedly support him should be mortified.
This Bush has escaped prosecution for his opening disingenuous, fear-mongering administration, only by manipulating the entire federal justice system, including the Supreme Court to further his meglomaniacal ego. He has surrounded himself with fellow schemers, such as Dick Cheney, and has used some of these as scapegoats, when something goes amiss, and someone must be held accountable for his lying treachery.
This Bush, it should be noted, protects and serves only himself, his cohorts and the wealthy 10 percent of the U.S., while he desperately seeks a “legacy” that does not contain death or destruction.
It does not take a Mensa member, Mr. Thoms, to see that he stopped honoring and protecting ordinary citizens years ago! As far as his “right to peace and quiet during K’port vacation” – Mr. Bush has logged in over two years of vacation time during his presidency – when ordinary citizens, due to the rising costs of everything, can’t even recall their last vacations! And yet, his fatigued, confused, “deer in the headlights” appearance seems welded to his person.
In all, we have not prospered during his reign, but barely survived it. And this is his legacy.
His “cowboy” politics and mentality have killed many more innocent people than the Sept. 11, 2001 attack, (where he stood with a tired fire chief in the aftermath of this horror and declared stalwartly, “as I stand here on the ‘rubbles’ I make a pledge to the American people. We intend to hunt down Osama Bin Laden to the ends of the earth . . . he can run . . . but he cannot hide!”
Well, it seems that Osama Bin Laden is still well and he can both run and hide, successfully. Especially after George W. decided that invading and illegally occupying the oil rich, (always a thorn in Daddy’s side) Iraq.
I do not begrudge Mr. Bush, Jr. the potential benefits of his years in office, his speeches at $75,000 a pop, or even the solidly endowed “Bush Library,” dedicated to a man, who I am fairly certain does not find his needed relaxation by reading a book with a hard cover. After all, as he said himself three years ago, “I seldom read the news, but am advised by folks who do.”
I just want this country back for the people and by the people, and of the people, who have been squeezed into poverty, except for the aforementioned 10 percent, and humiliated by this man’s lack of candor, grace and dignity upon every front.
So, Mr. Thoms, Patricia Frost is being protected not by President Bush, but by the constitution, giving us the right to peaceable assembly. Ms. Frost is no more being protected than the citizens of New Orleans after Katrina, many of who died begging for help, food and water and the many survivors, who were meted out by government supplied trailers (complete with health-defying poisons – Good job, Brownie!).
Ms. Frost is no more protected by Bush than the civilians of Iraq and Afghanistan, who were maimed and killed in his name.
Ms. Frost is no more protected than the seized, captured, detained and yes, tortured prisoners of his “War Against Terror.”
Sadly, Mr. Bush will never be indicted, nor impeached and will wander through the end of his reign taking still more vacation time, i.e. the summer Olympics, his faithful wife smiling beside him as he proudly holds up our American flag – backwards!
Oh, yes, on a smaller note, if Mr. Bush uses his word “nuk-u-la” to replace the word nuclear, in one more speech or press conference, my English teacher, Miss Cosgrove, will roll over in her grave, God bless her, for the hundredth time.
Enough said, thank you.
Patricia A. Frost
