Why are you seeking reelection and why do you think you are the best person to fill the seat? I am running for York County Register of Probate because it is imperative that the register have the knowledge and background required in order to be a support to the staff and the users of the probate registry and court especially in light of the fact that there will be a newly elected Judge of Probate assuming office January 1, 2009. I have been employed within the York County Registry of Probate for 28 years, some as deputy register of probate. I have been the register for the last four years. I have the knowledge of statutes and rules that govern the operation of the registry and court. I have the experience in preparing and operating under a budget that has been bare bones for many years. In 2007, with the assistance of the County Commissioners and Judge of Probate, the probate court established a “community service” program.
When an indigent person asks for a waiver of fees, the appointment of counsel or the services of a guardian ad litem, they are required to perform services to the county for credit towards the cost of such fees, counsel or guardian ad litem at the rate of $10 per hour. This enables the registry of probate to have older records scanned into the computer for access via the Internet thereby allowing the general public to view more of the registry’s records. Over the last 4 years, I have joined together with the Maine Association of Registers of Probate to practice uniformity among our 16 probate courts and serving as its secretary. This allows anyone filing within any one of the courts to expect uniformity in procedures and forms.

Why are you seeking elected office and why do you think you are the best person to fill the seat? I am seeking the office of register of probate to not only offer the voters an opportunity to make a total restructuring of the probate court, but to streamline the processes for adoption, will, and probate. The present structure with the usage of old forms that must be purchased in the court and typewritten on, in this age of computers this procedure is seen as quite antiquated and should be eliminated. Having experience in assisting others in probate in other states and visiting this probate office many times, I seen that the needs of the people are not heard. Special and personal interests and politics have far too long dominated this office and it needs to get back to what it once was – a court to help people. Probate affairs are emotional and sensitive matters and it is time to put someone in office that is caring, compassionate, and concerned. It is time for proper management, and time for a change. I believe in accountability and accessibility. Feel free to call or email me at anytime, for any reason. That is a practice I have followed since being an elected charter commissioner and City Councilor, and I will do it as the new register of probate for York County.
