Letter: Wonderful time marred by theft (Dec. 12, 2008)
Editor:
My name is Sue and I am from Connecticut. This past weekend, five girlfriends and me came to Kennebunkport for the Christmas Prelude and had a wonderful time. The people we met were so friendly and the carol singers were just fabulous, as were the shopkeepers, wait staff and hostesses at all of the restaurants, as well as the patrons. Everywhere we went we were pleasantly surprised.
One bad thing did happen over the weekend, however, and that is the reason for my letter. My friend who brought us there for the weekend drives a red PT Cruiser that has (had) 12 pink heart shaped magnets all over it. On Saturday, while parked in the parking lot of the town offices, someone stole four of those hearts off of her car. We were stunned! Who, in this lovely crowd of people at this wonderful event during the holiday season could do such a thing? I know that it may sound trivial to some, but those hearts have special meaning to my friend. You see, my friend is a clown by trade, “Valentine the clown,” hence, the pink hearts. Valentine is the most loving, generous, compassionate person that anyone could ever hope to meet. Most of her clown work is with very ill children at a special care hospital in Connecticut and lots of her work is done as a volunteer. Those heart magnets were specially ordered for her at the cost of $13 each and I personally think that it is horrible that someone would or could do such a thing to my friend. If they knew her, they never would have taken them. Honestly, as it couldn’t ruin the great weekend that we had in your lovely community, it certainly put a damper on the holiday spirit and I promised Valentine that I would try to do something about it.
My plea is that if the person who “broke” Valentine’s hearts is reading this, would you please consider granting a holiday wish and doing the right thing and returning them. It would be an anonymous gesture and it would mean a lot to my friend and restore our belief in the goodness of people. With all the bad things going on in our world today, show a sign that bad things can me made better. Please send the hearts without a return address to Kennebunk Post, 180 Main Street, Biddeford, ME, 04005, Attn: Ward Peck, Editor. He will be in touch with us if this miracle occurs. Happy holidays to everyone.
