The ballots are in, votes have been tallied, and The Post is pleased to announce Carol Whitten as the recipient of the 2008 Great Person Award.
With 14 nominees and votes flooding in, it was a tight race between all the nominees [Dan Boothby, Kate, Kendra, Jeni Kingston, Lexy K., Claudette McInnis, Ruth Merriam, Todd Nutting, Susan Plass, Sassy Smallman, Barbara Weeman and Ann Whetston] but Carol Whitten came out on top.
Whitten only found out she had been nominated when she saw her name in the paper Dec. 5. Nominated by Adam Perkins, her nephew, Whitten said she was surprised.
“The next time I saw him, I said, ‘I have a bone to pick with you,’ but it is very nice to have an adult nephew think that much of you,” she said.
In his nomination letter, Perkins said, “Carol spends an enormous amount of time contributing to our community, and is well known for being one of those busy people who seems tireless in taking on helpful tasks or new causes large or small. In addition to her job at the Kennebunk Free Library where she is known for going above and beyond for patrons, she often spends additional time volunteering for other library activities such as book and bake sales. Bi-weekly she appears at Atria (the assisted living complex) to read aloud seasonally chosen materials to the residents, and has been an active member of the West Kennebunk Village Committee.”
“I’m very surprised,” Whitten said when she was notified of the award. “It certainly makes you feel appreciated. There were a lot of very good choices on that list.”
Whitten will be featured as The Post “Weekly Interview” in the first edition of the paper in the New Year Jan. 9. Congratulations!
