Letter: Proceed with property sale (Jan. 9, 2009)

Park Street School should be sold to Avesta Housing to create low-income housing for seniors. The Kennebunk area would benefit from low income housing in the area; people could walk to the local stores, banks, library, Brick Store Museum, and watch the children play at the Park Street Park. Excellent walking area that many seniors enjoy.
This would provide more taxes for the town and save $1 million, plus $80,000 wasted on a building that would not provide anything for the town, plus the amount already spent since the town took the property over.
We must remember the old post office the town converted to a police station; that cost ran above one million dollars plus the cost of a large court suit.
Let’s be reasonable and vote what is best for the town for tax base, and help seniors who cannot afford to keep up their property but do not want to leave Kennebunk. This would open up a door of opportunity for them. Also, we could put the $1 million plus the $80,000 to maintain the building of our sidewalks, roads, and other improvements.
