Letter: Town needs to honor agreement with Avesta (Jan. 23, 2009)

Editor:

Avesta has entered into an agreement with the town of Kennebunk to remodel the former Park Street School into affordable housing. Avesta is a developer of affordable housing and has a reputation of providing quality facilities, maintaining those developments in top condition with periodic inspections to insure that the tenants adhere to the quality standards of Avesta. We, in Kennebunk, can be very proud of the recent completion of the former Cousens School into affordable housing, a facility that meets both the high standards that we expect in our community and provides much needed housing.

Through a petition drive a number of citizens have challenged the commitment to Avesta, by our Selectmen, forcing this issue to a secret ballot referendum on January 31st. This challenge calls for spending approximately two million dollars, including interest, to remodel this building into offices for non-profit entities. This expendture by the town is insufficient to meet the same quality standards we expect of Avesta, and will require further investment by the town to meet building standards for full usage.

This type of voting on January 31 does not allow us the opportunity to vote at town hall during the day, but must be voted on at a town hall meeting, If you feel strongly that this in an inopportune time to spend these monies for something no non-profit organization has demonstrated, a need, or support for, then please make the commitment to attend this important meeting, Saturday January 31, 9 a.m. at the high school gym This is a time to meet our responsibility as citizens of Kennebunk
