Letter: Thank you from a grateful school community (Feb. 6, 2009)

Editor:

Renowned anthropologist Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” The staff and students of Sea Road School wish to take this opportunity to extend our thanks to all of those thoughtful and committed citizens who played a role in making one of our dreams come true. Over the past few months a magnificent new greenhouse has been attached to the south side of the Sea Road School, with access through our science lab. This greenhouse project is a creative and innovative way to make student learning come alive in the areas of science, math, and writing.

The greenhouse project became a reality with help from across our community and was spear-headed by a generous grant from the Education Foundation of the Kennebunks. The grant was just a portion of the $90,000 the foundation has awarded to the MSAD 71 schools this past year. In addition to the grant, the school received a substantial price reduction from Tru-North Home Systems, expert advice and labor from Spang Builders, and the efforts of countless parents, students and MSAD 71 staff. In much the same way our national leaders are calling for the nation to “role up their sleeves and pitch in,” this great community known as the Kennebunks has shown how this can be accomplished.

To honor the spirit of this combined effort, we pledge to make this new addition to our school a true community resource. To that end, we have already had conversations with the Sea Coast Garden Club about potential partnerships where they can share their expertise and utilize this tremendous resource. Additionally, we have offered the Kennebunk Parks and Recreation Department use of the facility during their summer programs. This past week our students planted more than 1000 seedlings, many of which will be donated back to the community. Should any members of the community have suggestions as to how we may better serve our constituents in this regard, we invite them to contact us at Sea Road School. At Sea Road School we feel fortunate to be a part of such a thoughtful and committed community.
