Little interest in RSU votes (Feb. 6, 2009)

Voters in Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Arundel turned out to elect directors for the 12-member school board for the Regional School Unit combining Arundel and Maine School Administrative District 71.

Less than 3 percent of registered voters turned out to elect six board members to represent Kennebunk with staggered three-year, two-year and one-year terms. Current members of the MSAD 71 Board of Directors Tim Hussey and John Sharood have been elected to three-year seats.

MSAD 71 Board of Directors member Art Leblanc was elected to a two-year term along with write-in candidate Kevin Knight who is new to the school board.

Former MSAD 71 board member Gayle Spofford and current MSAD 71 board member Jim Smith are on the board for a one-year term.

Kennebunkport had 157 registered voters elect three directors to the board. With current MSAD 71 Board of Directors Chairman Maureen King filling the two-year seat and Norm Archer, currently on the MSAD 71 Board of Directors, elected for the one-year seat, Kennebunkport residents chose the write-in candidate Bob Domine for the three-year seat.

Arundel had less than one percent voter turnout with 35 residents electing three representatives, including RSU Planning Committee members Jack Reetz and Leia Lowery filling the three and two-year seats and current Arundel School Board member Pamela Richard-Wuerthner the one-year seat.

The board’s first meeting took place last night, after The Post’s press time.
