Letter: Thanks for helping make fishing derby a success (Feb. 27, 2009)

Editor:

On Saturday, Feb. 21, the West Kennebunk Fire Department hosted the second annual Fishing Derby in memory of our son Mark Lank at Mousam Lake in Shapleigh. The morning was cold and windy but that did not stop the fishermen, women and children from coming out in force to see if they could land that winning fish. The Biggest Fish category was won by a father and daughter team. In the adult category it was a 26-inch lake trout that took the prize for largest fish caught. In the children’s category it was a 25-inch lake trout that out won the other fish caught. People came throughout the day and registered, even if they weren’t fishing and others just stopped by and made donations or bought raffle tickets. The department raised more than $1,300 from the sale of raffle tickets, registration fees and donations. Some of this was spent out in winnings and expenses for the derby, but it looks like the West Kennebunk Fire Department will be able to give out another $1,000 scholarship this year to a Kennebunk High School senior wanting to further his or her education.

I want to thank all of you for making this possible. Without the generous donations of prizes and money we would not have been able to accomplish what we did. A special thank you to Bob and Sandy Kinney and family, Dana Ingham, Tom Cahoon and Kevin Bachi for all that they did to make this day happen. Mark would have been extremely honored for all that has been done.
