Letter: Sell water, save habitat (March, 6, 2009)
Right now the Wells Ordinance Review Committee is meeting regularly and publicly to craft a fair and legal ordinance. I hope that they continue to gather all of the facts, and not misinformation. Other towns in Maine have successfully enacted ordinances that both protect the local water resources and allow businesses to operate responsibly. Having Poland Spring purchase water from the KK&W Water District would be an environmental boon for the town of Wells and water district customers.
Instead of having Mike Brown’s land sold to a residential developer, which would increase the environmental pressure on the aquifer, this land would add to the land conserved by the water district and the nature conservancy along Branch Brook. The outcome would be the protection of a precious watershed that also generates revenue to benefit its water district customers. What’s wrong with that?
In tough times like these, we should be open to considering well thought out management plans that could mean stable water rates and safe aquifers.
