Letter: Looking for information (May 15, 2009)

Editor:

In early April, after most of the snow was gone, thanks to the Kennebunk Tax Assessors map, I found the Gillpatrick Cemetery. One of my great-great-great grandfathers is buried there. I noted some stones, etc. but the cemetery was mostly covered with leaves and forest debris and did not give a clear picture of how many might be interred there.

On May 2, I returned and was very surprised and pleased that the entire cemetery had been cleaned and most (15) of the graves were clearly identified with both head and foot stones. Many of the markers were just field stones, some smooth, unmarked, upright stones and many worn and broken stones. My ancestor had a veterans flag beside his stone. Apparently, unlike Kennebunkport, Kennebunk does remember and honor their dead by recording and maintaining their cemeteries and decorating their veterans’ graves.

I would like to thank those who are responsible for these efforts and also request some information if they have the knowledge of what the white, wooden crosses signify. There are several unidentified graves that have a cross placed at the headstone so someone must know who are buried in those graves. If anyone does know, would they kindly pass that information on to me.
