Letter: ‘Lost York County’ writer responds (June 5, 2009)
I want to thank the Kennebunk Post for the great article they did on my new book, “Lost York County,” I really appreciate the support from the Post. I did want to clear up a couple of quotes from the article to prevent any misunderstandings.
About Shapleigh, I wasn’t talking about the town, but rather about North Shapleigh Square, which was a bustling town center at the turn of the last century, with stores, homes and businesses.
Also, regarding the historic Lord Mansion on Summer Street; when a housing development was proposed for the land behind it, Summer Street residents banded together to fight the proposal and in the end it was defeated. They did a great job stopping something that would have destroyed the neighborhood, and this is an example of what can happen when people unite and work together to preserve local landmarks and landscapes. However, when the Greek revival farm house next to Stop & Shop on Portland Street was threatened with demolition, and destroyed, no one said anything in protest. It’s this selective preservation that concerns me, we should care about our entire town, not just what’s in our backyard.
