“Imagine big because we finally made it,” Kendra Paige said to her classmates as she welcomed everyone to the June 7 commencement ceremony for Kennebunk High School class of 2009.
The 198 graduates responded to Paige’s welcome with applause and shouts as they sat on the field in rows of white and blue.
Valedictorian Ellen Kerschensteiner addressed the class with her “ever so sage advice from [her] personal experience.”
Putting in the effort will lead to satisfaction, she said. She encouraged her classmates to think independently and not rely on others for fulfillment.
“Put your best foot forward,” Kerschensteiner said. “We have the potential to go places. The past is something we should remember, but the future is something to look forward to.”
Kennebunk High School Principal Peter Dawson said the ceremony is “mildly ironic” when using the terms graduation and commencement.
“Graduation implies a completion, while commencement implies a beginning,” Dawson said. “You are prepared to succeed at the highest level in your future. I hope you go confidently.”
Dawson, who just completed his first school year as principal, offered advice to his first graduating class: Enrich life with others, “trust and make yourself worthy of trust,” tolerate diversity and embrace the gray in life. He added, “chew before swallowing – both food and ideas.”
“Live lives that are worthy of you,” Dawson said.
