Letter: Children prove they care (June 19, 2009)

Editor:

The Child Abuse Prevention Council of York County thanks students of Wells Elementary School in Wells for partnering with the council in its “Because We Care” book drive.

The goal of the drive was to collect gently used books from students to be “shared” with other students and children in York County who may not own many books. The students were asked to bring in a book they enjoyed reading to share with children throughout York County to help them realize the joy of having their own book.

The response of the kindergarten through fourth grade students was overwhelming. More than 450 books were donated by Wells Elementary students!

Through the generosity of the Wells Elementary school community, many York County children will now become book owners who will have the opportunity to read and read again a story enjoyed and recommended by students at Wells Elementary School.

The council also extends its appreciation to Principal Marianne Thorne, Callie Clapp, Karen Westerberg and staff at Wells Elementary School for their help in coordinating the drive.

Thank you Wells Elementary School staff and students for making student citizenship a priority that will benefit many in the years to come.

Laurie DuPaul, executive director

Child Abuse Prevention Council of York County
