Letter: Motorcyclists unfairly targeted (July 3, 2009)

[Regarding the letter “Motorcycle noise exposure can cause health problems,” June 26 page 8]
I am hoping you are a doctor or have done studies on motorcycles and loud pipes causing chronic fatigue, anxiety, sleep deprivation, etc. People should focus on maybe why motorcycles have loud pipes. When riding along on the roads and seeing people in cars on cell phones, putting make up on, reading the newspapers not even paying any attention to what is ahead of them or around them. When we rev our bikes we get the drivers’ attention. Maybe there is not a study on how loud pipes save lives but, boy, it sure has saved me a few times. You should focus on getting laws in for these people who live on their cell phones. Even you must have seen this and how distracting it is. I am aware of the EPA noise standards. I do not see anyone complaining about the tractor trailer trucks or dump trucks that use their engine brakes to slow them down. It is time for people to stop complaining about motorcycles.
It seems that everyone is blaming Bentley’s for all the noise from bikes. Have you seen the gas prices for the last two years? There has been a huge increase in motorcycle sales because of the fuel prices. We get anywhere from 40 to 55 miles per gallon. What does your car get? Also take a count on a good weekend and count the bikes that are at local gas stations, restaurants, hotels, stores even campgrounds in the area. It keeps our economy going and the owners of the business are not complaining.
Motorcycle riders are probably the most donating individuals around. Whenever there is a child that has a disease or needs money for surgeries because the parents have lost their jobs and insurance they come to Bentley’s and ask us for help. How much have you donated? Camp Waban is another benefactor of our bike rides every year we hold a ride and we raise more than $14,000.
We do a Thanksgiving basket ride to provide food for the needy and I am proud so say we have helped the communities Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Arundel and then it is our Christmas toy run to help the children have a Merry Christmas.
I am proud to be a biker and proud to be associated with Bentley’s Saloon and for all the good people with hearts of gold who take time out of their busy schedule to make someone’s world a little bit happy. If you would like to go on a ride, you can be my passenger and see what it is all about.
