Chamber nets $2,500 for cancer research

The Kennebunk-Kennebunkport Chamber of Commerce held its second annual “Fashion Show of the Kennebunks” June 18 at the Nonantum Resort. The show is the ultimate ladies night, combining a  fashion show from local merchants, complimentary signature martinis and most importantly the ability to donate proceeds to the Maine Cancer Foundation for Breast Cancer Research.

Last year the show was bursting at the seams with guests, excited about this new event. This year the show was just as dynamic thanks to merchants such as Goodall Health Center of the Kennebunks and Atlantic Holdings, LLC, Poland Spring Water, Cold River Vodka, Cottage Breeze Day Spa and Boutique, Spa at River’s Edge and Laurel makeup.

The challenging economy made itself felt in the form of decreased tickets sales. The chamber fell short of its goal to match last year’s donation of $3,000. After all the receipts were tallied and bills were paid, the chamber was able to donate $2,500 to the Maine Cancer Foundation. The committee is already working on next year’s event and hope to be able to increase the donation by a sizeable amount.

Decorate a birdhouse

The bi-annual flower show and decorated birdhouse auction to benefit the Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library takes place from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 2 at the library, 18 Maine St. in Kennebunkport. A $20 ticket donation can be purchased at the library before or at the show.

The fundraiser combines books, flowers, and a great deal of imagination. Exhibitors may enter arrangements in several categories: general, men’s, miniatures, children’s, and large container. Completed entries will be accepted on the day of the show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone entering the flower show is asked to present name, class entered, and the book title or author with the arrangement. First, second, and third prizes will be judged and awarded.

Donations allow participants to judge arrangements, enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, and bid on a variety of decorated birdhouses created by local artists including Holly Ross, Suzanne Payne, Peter Hoff, Edward Forrest, M.L. Norton, Tom Hanley, Betsey Mahoney, Jenne James, Joan Sutter, Louise Gryzbowski/Louise Kralich, Christina D’Filipp, Jennifer Merry, Harriet Gott, Paul Bonneau, Suzanne Payne, and more.Call the library at 967-2778 for details.
