Second Kennebunk
VentiCordi concert, Aug. 11
New chamber music is coming to the Kennebunks this summer, as VentiCordi performs Aug. 11 at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church of Kennebunk.
VentiCordi (winds and strings) is a musical collaboration between oboist Kathleen McNerney and violinist Dean Stein, combining their love of chamber music with innovative programming that blends wind and string instruments. Both McNerney and Stein performed as members of professional chamber ensembles. McNerney played oboe with two woodwind quintets in Los Angeles; Imbroglio and Calico Winds, and Stein was a violinist with the DaPonte String Quartet. Their respective musical journeys prepared them to explore creative frontiers beyond the usual constraints of either format.
The concert features music from the Baroque to the Contemporary. The concert opens with the Sonata for violin and oboe by Baroque composer Zelenka, with guest artists bassoonist Wren Saunders, cellist Paul Ross and harpsichordist Peter Sykes. Two duos add contrast to the program. First, the colorful sounds of Brazil come to life in the Duo for oboe and bassoon of Heitor Villa-Lobos, followed by the Russian composer Gliere’s charming set of Duos for violin and cello. Los Angeles based composer John Steinmetz will be in attendance to introduce his work, ‘Mixed Blessings’ for oboe, bassoon, violin, cello, and harpsichord. This performance will be the Maine premiere of ‘Mixed Blessings’.
Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church located at 114 Main St. in Kennebunk. General admission is $20 at the door. Seniors are $15, and those 18 years and younger are $5. For more information call 725-0219.
Author of local history visits Kennebunk Free Library
Massachusetts author Marcy Titcomb Kudirka will sign copies of her first collection of historical vignettes, “Not So Long Ago in Maine,” at 3 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 13 at the Kennebunk Free Library, 112 Main St.
Less than 250 years ago Kennebunk was surrounded by Indians and embedded in wilderness. The early settlers arrived with a spirit of determination; they left repressive homes and found opportunities on the Maine coast. Settlers struggled against harsh weather, a turbulent economy and personal loss. Their stories provide valuable insight to us, their descendents, as extraordinary events shaped their lives.
Based on unpublished notes, diaries and letters belonging Stephen Titcomb and Elizabeth Wildes Roberts Kilham and her family, “Not So Long Ago in Maine” offers a rare glimpse back in time; a “snapshot” of the life and times in Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and closely related towns, from the late 1600s to the Civil War .
“Not So Long Ago in Maine” will be for sale at the event. For more information, call 985-2173 or visit www.kennebunklibrary.org.
