Letter: Friends help center thrive (Aug. 7, 2009)
To the editor:
From where I sit, the economy has created a pretty tough time for nonprofit organizations. Then, between the slow economy and a rainy summer, local businesses have been hit with a double whammy. Yet through it all these wonderful business partners have stepped up to the plate to help us sustain our organization. As the executive director of the Senior Center at Lower Village, I speak for our members when I say we are very fortunate and extremely grateful to receive such outstanding support, especially given the challenges these businesses face during these trying financial times.
In July alone we held fundraising events that could not have been possible without the kindness and generosity of area merchants and individuals. Our 15th annual “Affairs to Remember” auction was a huge success thanks to donations of merchandise and gift certificates for goods and services. In a year when it might have been easier to say “sorry, I just can’t do it this year,” every single merchant stepped up to the plate to help us. They do this year after year, in good times and bad.
In mid-July, Huntington Common donated a luncheon to our members – lobster bisque, lobster rolls jam packed with succulent lobster and a homemade berry cobbler. It was terrific and much appreciated by those attending.
At the end of July we held our first All American Pie Baking Contest at the Nonanturm Resort. The Nonantum is an outstanding corporate citizen. They are always generous to area nonprofits and our event was no exception. They donated their beautiful patio, staff to set up, festive linens and centerpieces, beverages and ice cream to ensure that our first contest would be a stellar event. Tim Ames has a huge heart, an eye for detail and takes care of everything with enthusiasm and professionalism. The Nonantum will also be hosting our fashion show and luncheon Aug. 12. Tickets are on sale now.
All year through would not make it without our kitchen tour and newsletter advertisers, other luncheon “sponsors,” and activity sponsors. To our loyal members and contributors, local businesses are the backbone of our financial wellbeing. We thank you all for your support.
Susan Pettit, Executive Director
Senior Center at Lower Village
