It’s time to color Biddeford’s streets
Annual Chalk on the Walk fest designed for artists of all ages
Local artists will be joined by Bread & Puppet Theater and live musical performances Saturday during Biddeford’s Chalk on the Walk 2009.
The free event, sponsored by Heart of Biddeford, will be held downtown from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to street chalking, the event will include pony rides, street performances, pumpkin bowling, bouncy house, aquarium touch tank, giant bubble blowing and fire juggling.
The politically inspired theater company Bread & Puppet will conduct a workshop during Chalk on the Walk at 3 p.m. in City Square. Bread & Puppet, active since the 1960s, derives its name from the theater’s practice of sharing its own fresh bread, served for free with a strong garlic aioli, with the audience of each performance to help create community and reinforce its belief that art should be as basic to life as bread.
Bread & Puppet also will offer select audience members of Chalk on the Walk an opportunity to perform live on stage later Saturday during an appearance at Biddeford City Theater. The 7 p.m. performance is free and open to the public, however donations will be accepted.
Maine Academy of Modern Music’s School of Rock will perform contemporary rock, and Adam Waxman of Portland will take the stage on the steps of Biddeford City Hall at 1 p.m. to perform rock and rhythm and blues music.
Registration for chalk drawing begins in City Square behind City Hall at 9:30 a.m. The fee is $5 for children and $10 for adults (up to four people per square).
Scholarships are available upon request. Businesses or individuals may sponsor a square for $100 to support the Heart of Biddeford’s mission to improve the quality of retail and cultural life in the downtown district.
