Subject of Winfrey episode in hospital
Shiloh Pepin, 10, of Kennebunkport, was admitted to Maine Medical Center in Portland Tuesday and was listed in critical condition.
Pepin has sironomelia, also known as “mermaid syndrome,” which is a congenital deformity that causes her legs to be fused together, giving the appearance of a mermaid’s tail.
Shiloh’s mother, Leslie Pepin, released a short statement Tuesday through a hospital spokesman.
“Shiloh is really sick and we are doing everything possible. She is in the right place with the right people taking care of her,” she said.
Shiloh appeared on a segment of the Oprah Winfrey Show in September about medical miracles. On Sunday, Oct. 11, TLC premiered a documentary about Shiloh’s life, a follow up to one that aired in 2007. She was also featured in the Sept. 4 issue of the Post.
Shiloh was born with a partial kidney and received a kidney transplant when she was four and one- half months old. She underwent another transplant in 2007.
Shiloh entered fifth grade at Consolidated School in Kennebunkport this year.
