Voting will allow lighthouse work
Kennebunkport residents approved all questions for the special town
referendum election, including the town’s first contract zone.
The contract zone will allow the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust to make improvements to the Goat Island Lighthouse.
“We are grateful to citizens of the town that they continue to support us in such and overwhelming manner,” said Tom Bradbury, president of the trust.
Bradbury said there are still a number of things that need to be done before work can begin on Goat Island.
He said the process must go through the proper boards and state agencies. Progress also depends on fundraising.
“We’re in search of those who would love to see it happen and like to be a part of it. In the meantime, we’ll be doing behind the scenes planning and legal regulatory work that can allow it to happen,” he said.
Overall in Kennebunkport, 1,956 ballots were cast. Out of 2,729 registered voters, 72 percent came out Tuesday to vote. Town Clerk April Dufoe said about 500 people voted absentee.
