State ballot questions drive turnout

Kennebunk and Kennebunkport residents approved all local referendum questions Tuesday, including a proposal in Kennebunk to enhance its downtoåwn.
Kennebunk residents voted 2,896 to 2,250 to approve borrowing $1.3 million from the town’s Tax Increment Financing district to make downtown improvements.
Residents voted down the project in June for a little more than $2 million.
Town Manager Barry Tibbetts said the next step is for selectmen to discuss awarding bids at an upcoming meeting.
The board will then meet with the contractor to talk about a timeline for the project.
Kennebunk residents also voted to allow a Webber Hill contract zone to allow construction of a cell tower. Residents voted 3,760 to 1,262.
Overall in Kennebunk, 5,308 ballots were cast – 1,650 of which were absentee ballots. Total number of registered voters, including the 111 who registered at the polls, was 9,145. Kennebunk had a 58 percent voter turnout.

Kennebunkport residents approved all questions for the special town referendum election, including the town’s first contract zone to allow the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust to make improvements to the Goat Island Lighthouse.
“We are grateful to citizens of the town that they continue to support us in such and overwhelming manner,” said Tom Bradbury, president of the trust.
Bradbury said there are still a number of things that need to be done before work can begin on Goat Island.
Overall in Kennebunkport, 1,956 ballots were cast. Out of 2,729 registered voters, 72 percent came out Tuesday to vote. Town Clerk April Dufoe said about 500 people voted absentee.
