Contractor selected for downtown improvements

Selectmen unanimously voted Tuesday to award the bid for the downtown enhancement project.
Kennebunk residents voted Nov. 3 in favor of the project 2,896 to 2,250.
The bid went to LaBrecque Construction for $1,066,421. Construction includes granite, curbing, pavers, crosswalks, signage, drainage, trees, benches and paving pedestrian sidewalks.
The lighting portion of the project is estimated at 223,500 and includes new poles, synchronization of lights, new LED fixtures, underground cabling, brackets, base foundations and more.
Town Manager Barry Tibbetts said he will work with Kennebunk Light and Power on purchasing services from them and working on securing grants for the project.
Selectman Bob Higgins said he is interested in exploring whether the 40 or so light poles that will be removed can be replaced in West Kennebunk.
Engineer Chris Osterrieder said physically, it can be done. However, getting replacement parts for the poles is a problem because they have become obsolete.
Osterrieder said he would consult with Kennebunk Light and Power to see how many are salvageable, however.
Selectmen decided to hold a vote on the $70,079 contingency fund until spring, when the project is slated to begin.
Osterrieder said the project should take about four months.
Tibbetts said this winter he wants to meet with downtown merchants to discuss the construction schedule and whether the project should be split by the busy tourist season or run straight through.
