Letter: Reader believes selectmen need privacy (Printed Dec. 11, 2009)
To the editor:
John Costin reaches some sarcastic conclusions that may be correct in his Dec. 4 letter (“Unexpected ‘gift’ from town). Ultimately, the risk taken by the town in hiring a community development director will only be proven wise when the position creates more tax revenue than salary.
The problem Mr. Costin has should not be with the Board of Selectmen. It should be with the policy that requires all selectmen meetings to be held in public. I support the need for public meetings. They should be scheduled and disclosed. However, the selectmen should have the right to conference in private. I cannot imagine running a business with a camera in my face all the time. These people graciously make their time available to the town of Kennebunk. Let them be.
