Keep town out of real estate (Printed March 19, 2010)
To the editor:
The
issue about the Mobil station site is disturbing. We have been told the town
might use it for expanding the farmers market, a visitor’s center with
bathrooms or for downtown parking.
We
have heard suggested it is a way to prevent another gas station downtown. What
are the real plans for this venture? It appears our town has $300,000 for this
purchase.
The
idea might be good, but our town should not be in the real estate business. No
one has explained how we will make up for the lost tax dollars. No financial
plan has been voiced how Kennebunk will pay for this property after it is
purchased. How long will it take Kennebunk to sell it? These are disturbing
questions in difficult times.
The
present owner has not been able to sell the property. Why doesn’t the town work
and help that owner to sell it? What makes Kennebunk think it will have more
luck selling it? By now our elected and appointed leaders should have learned
from the tales of two schools. When will they ever learn? If there is an excess
of $300,000 in the town’s treasury, why not use it to lower our tax burdens?
Why not use these funds for those in need?
