Letter: Consider all taxpayers (Printed March 19, 2010)
To the editor:
Although
it has not come as a surprise to me, I read that my real estate taxes will
increase about 13 percent due to a calculation “error.” If this increase is in
fact made, my real estate taxes will have increased 70 percent since 2001. I
can tell you that my wages have not. As a matter of fact, I am currently
unemployed.
Now
I have read parents, not taxpayers, were given the opportunity to complete a
survey on the current Thornton Academy controversy.
A
large percentage of our tax dollars are already spent on education, and my
husband and I never had children. Because of the current economic climate,
compromise and sacrifice must be made by all. Parents must understand
taxpayers, some of whom are unemployed, simply cannot continue to issue a blank
check to educate children.
If
parents do insist on luxuries such as the drama club, transportation for after
school activities and sports activities, perhaps they should dig into their own
pockets to pay for them. My pocket has a hole in it.
