Letter: Visitors don’t burden beach (Printed March 19, 2010)
To the editor:
It
is sad a group of beachfront homeowners who have entered into a lawsuit in
order to privatize “their” beach and restrict other Kennebunkport homeowners
and taxpayers from access to the shoreline.
We
have lived here for a decade and walk the beaches regularly year-round. We have
never seen garbage left, rarely noticed dog droppings or witnessed fights or other
behavior that would be considered inappropriate.
For
a moment, let’s put aside these complaints, and focus on the town’s image to
outsiders who visit and stay in the numerous hotels and inns. What will become
of these tourists who are the main economic stream and lifeblood to retail
establishments and the town’s revenue base? If the beaches are closed, tourists
will go elsewhere and so will their dollars. Our taxes will increase
dramatically or town services will be reduced.
Goose
Rocks residents and all town homeowners should consider the probable reduction
in property resale values. Those not on the beach may not be able to rent their
homes.
All
our properties will become less valuable when we sell, because buying a home in
Kennebunkport will not allow you beach access. Some of those who wish to
restrict access need not worry, because their homes are held in family trusts
and handed down without probate taxes when they die.
Please
support the town by voting to fund the legal battle to maintain access to Goose
Rocks Beach for all, and not just the fortunate few.
Liz and Fred Ross
