Letter: Schools far from excellent (Printed April 9, 2010)

To the editor:

This past week the state’s Department of Education released its report on schools in Maine as to how they are meeting achievement and progress objectives, with an average that is a composite of the past three years results. Kennebunk High School finished below the state average at under 55 percent. What this means is 45 percent of students are either failing to meet state standards, or only partially meeting them.

Kennebunk High School is not a school of excellence, as recently touted at a celebration gathering, but one that is failing a significant number of our children.

Let’s stop masquerading as something we are not, and set meaningful, measurable, goals and objectives for the future, with timely progress reports to students, parents and taxpayers.
